A Brief History of Curry
Many people know that Chicken Tikka Masala has become Britain's favourite dish, but Europe's love affair with spicy Indian food goes back much further than most realise... In fact, Christopher Columbus only discovered America by mistake - he thought he had found a shortcut to India, and was motivated by the very lucrative spice trade. Centuries later, the British Empire was largely driven onwards by the desire of traders to get a piece of the spice trade. Before long it wasn't just the spices of the East which were in demand in Britain, and the first recipe for "Curry" in an English cookery book appeared as long ago as 1747! In the 20th century, immigration to the UK from Southern Asia bought authentic Indian food to every town in Britain, and the dishes we all know and love - including Chicken Tikka Masala - evolved into the forms we know today.
